NC Bicyclist Crash Dashboard

Cary on Bikes and BikeWalk NC have produced a web dashboard of bicyclist-motorist collision data that visualizes where and under what circumstances crashes are happening in every city of North Carolina. The dashboard is located at https://caryonbikes.org/web-apps/nc-bicyclist-crash-dashboard.html

Select your city from the drop-down menu and filter by additional features such as crash severity, road speed limit, and bicyclist age:

Descriptions are provided for common crash types, and effective countermeasures in the form of engineering, education, encouragement, and enforcement strategies are provided for each crash type:

The posted speed limits for motorist-overtaking-bicyclists are charted to show the effects of vehicle speed on the relative frequency of same-direction collisions under different lighting conditions:

The original crash data comes from police reports compiled by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. BikeWalk NC and Cary on Bikes downloaded the dataset, consolidated some of the crash types for simplicity, and developed the web dashboard. We believe this type of data-driven analysis and visualization of where and how crashes happen helps public authorities direct the right solutions where they will be effective and empowers bicyclists with knowledge that will help them avoid collisions.
